8/1/10 – DON HENRY

Don Henry may be the next Randy Newman. A piercingly insightful songwriter who uses irony like a scalpel."

For a co-composer of the moving hit, Where've You Been, Don Henry wields a wicked sense of humor."

8/1/10 – DON HENRY

Here is the Music Player. You need to installl flash player to show this cool thing!

I saw The Waymores in concert last week and fell in love (all over again) with the songs of Don Henry (who is in the trio with Tom Kimmel & Sally Barris). Don Henry is a Grammy® award winning songwriter whose songs have been recorded by Ray Charles, Patti Page, Kathy Mattea, Lonestar, Conway Twitty, and B.J. Thomas.

The first song in the player, The Road to Paradise (written with Tom Occhipinti), paints a beautiful picture of a car trip to the lake with the family. It’s the kind of memory that I wish everyone had. It is painted with loving detail and transports the listener back in time while reminding us that it is the journey that really matters.

The road to paradise is paradise.

Ben and Betty and their little brother Jack
Were dreaming in their sleeping bags mindless of the fact
That the future held a promise of what hadn’t happened yet
And the moment they were in will be the past they won’t forget
The road to paradise is paradise

All Kinds of Kinds (written with Phillip Coleman) will make you laugh and it will make you think – really make you think. I love songs that can do that.

Where’ve You Been (written with Jon Vezner) was a huge hit for Kathy Mattea but I love to hear Don sing it. The song won a Grammy® for best country song and was named “Song of the Year” by the Academy of Country Music, The Country Music Association, and the Nashville Songwriters Association International. It was the first song to win all four honors in one year. When you listen to the song, it’s easy to understand why it won so many awards.

The first video was filmed in our kitchen the very first time I met Don. I had a brand new video camera and I filmed him singing that song and had it up on YouTube before breakfast. I am sure this song, which takes on intelligent design, must be scary for Don to sing in some towns.

The second video is of Don’s song Beautiful Fool, which has been recorded by so many amazing singers. Again, I love the way Don sings it. This video (which was filmed at The Bluebird in Nashville) may seem like an odd choice since it features Don’s elbow front and center. But I love this performance of the song, so this is the one I decided to share.

The last video just cracked me up when I found it on YouTube. The song is The Road to Paradise (which is also in the player), but the first 5 minutes is of Don trying to stop laughing long enough to actually sing the song. The other performers in the video are Craig Carothers and Sally Barris, who are clearly trying to help Don stop laughing!

He must really be honored to be a part of your beautiful mind/world. Lucky bastard!
Thanks for the awesomeness of your blog and sweetness of your hospitality. I only hope Don appreciates it too.

What a great selection for the Troubadour Series. I’ve had the distinct pleasure of being in Don Henry’s audience. His skill as a songwriter is indeed worth every word in your page. I’m looking forward to seeing him the next time he and Sally and Tom pass through my town.
