11/1/09 – KATE CAMPBELL

Here is the Music Player. You need to installl flash player to show this cool thing!

With her compassionate tone and sometimes quirky approach, Kate Campbell has made a musical niche for herself writing songs which explore the complex topics of race, religion, history, and human relationships. Her music runs the gamut from R&B and pop rhythms to gospel, country, and folk sounds. No matter what the style, her voice is just as sweet as honey.
Bury Me in Bluegrass (written with Ira Campbell & Johnny Pierce) is from Kate’s debut album and was the first song of Kate’s that I fell in love with. It is the story about having to sell the family farm when to the singer it’s “more than just a piece of land.”

Will you walk with me across the blue green pastures
I wanna see the horses run one more time
You can lay me down beside the ones gone before me
Bury me in bluegrass when I die

The next two songs were both written with Walt Aldridge and I think they are both amazing. The first one, Fade to Blue, is from Kate’s album Blues and Lamentations and is a gem of a song. Look Away is my favorite song of Kate’s. It is a complex song – as complex as the southern childhood that the song is written about. For those of us who grew up in the South and for those who didn’t, this song is a must listen.

I was taught by elders wiser
Love your neighbor, love your God
Never saw a cross on fire
Never saw an angry mob

I saw sweet magnolia blossoms
I chased lightning bugs at night
Never dreaming others saw
Our way of life in black and white

I have included my version of Kate’s song called Lanterns on the Levee. I have always loved “I will be there for you” songs and this is one of my favorites. That’s Kate singing the beautiful harmony part.

Kate puts a lot of humorous songs in her sets and Funeral Food is one of the best. I love the way the audience always responds to this song. Kate could most likely sing this song in the middle of a funeral and have people laughing. The second video is an introduction to a trio that Kate is in with Pierce Pettis and Tom Kimmel, and I think it does a good job explaining what much of their writing is about.

Kate’s birthday was yesterday, so I’m happy to post this today. Happy Birthday, Kitty Kate!

It’s about time Kate got the kiss we all want with our whole lives. She didn’t wait for a sign or skip lessons, she begged for the real assignment and gave her heart and soul to songwriting. Standing in a crowd listening to Kate there are always people in shivers and tears, not just giving each other the nod, but the wink that comes when you know you’re in the presence of the great ones.

Thank you for honoring one of the greatest songwriters of all time.

    peace,
    Jesse
