9/1/10 – KENNY EDWARDS

Here is the Music Player. You need to installl flash player to show this cool thing!

I am deeply sorry to say that my friend, Kenny Edwards, died on August 18, 2010 after battling cancer for the past year. He continued to do what he loved best – making music – and was touring with Karla Bonoff until two weeks before his death.

Kenny Edwards was barely out of high school when he founded The Stone Poneys with Linda Ronstadt. Their hit, Different Drum, launched her solo career.

A few years later he was one of the founding members of Bryndle with Karla Bonoff, Andrew Gold, and Wendy Waldman.

He continued to work with Bonoff over the years, producing all of her solo albums and touring with her.

In the 70′s, he returned to work with Ronstadt when she was recording the album Heart Like a Wheel. Kenny introduced Ronstadt to Karla Bonoff’s music, which became a major part of Ronstadt’s repertoire. Ronstadt said recently, “When Kenny and Andrew started singing together with me, that became a really important part of my sound. Having those strong male voices behind me gave me a chance to sing the high leads.”

He was also a guitarist and singer for Stevie Nicks, Don Henley, Brian Wilson, Art Garfunkel, and Vince Gill.

Kenny and I taught a performance workshop together a few years ago at SummerSongs, a songwriting camp in Ashokan, NY. We were assigned to teach together and had never met before the first day of camp. Any kind of nervousness or intimidation I might have felt melted the minute I met him. He was humble, kind, funny, and SO very talented. We both play Collings Guitars which bonded us immediately, although I have to say that mine never, ever sounded as sweet as his. We had a total blast teaching that class together, and after that I always looked forward to catching up with him whenever our paths crossed.

It was at camp that summer that I fell in love with Kenny’s song, No Tears. I couldn’t stop singing it when I heard that Kenny was being flown back to his home in Santa Barbara for hospice care.

No tears – No tears
But this aching in my heart won’t disappear

  1. Thank you Mae for featuring Kenny. Small detail correction – Kenny wasn’t flown back to Santa Barbara for hospice – he never got to that point – he was flown back to Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara CA with us holding out hope that he’d rebound & be around for awhile. He contracted TTP – a life-threatening blood disorder & that’s what caught us off-guard & put him in the hospital in CO so gravely ill. He managed to rally some even so, and we are just overcome that we lost him so soon after getting home. Kindest regards, Kenny’s friend & Mgr.

I feel so blessed that I was lucky enough to be in that wonderful performance class at Summersongs with the two of you, Mae. You both were a wonderful! Kenny was certainly a troubadour! What a great listener and so generous with his ideas. Thanks for bringing his music here.
