His songs have enough personality to fill the concert hall single-handed.”

Tom Kimmel is a beautiful writer. He is soulful and sexy and sweet and clever. He is one of my personal favorites. There was no way I could include all of his songs that I love in this profile. So, I recommend that you get his fantastic new album, Never Saw Blue. It is a collection of all of his songs that have been featured in movies and television.
Some amazing artists have recorded Tom’s songs: Linda Rondstadt, Shawn Colvin, Art Garfunkel, Nanci Griffith, Maura O’Connell, Randy Travis, Joe Cocker, Roger McGuinn, Levon Helm, Kathy Mattea, Johnny Cash, & Waylon Jennings. Wow! He has also had his songs featured in many movies including, Runaway Bride, Serendipity, and Cruel Intentions.
The first Tom Kimmel song I heard was Maura O’Connell singing Blue Train (written with Jennifer Kimball) at the Bottom Line in NYC. I was blown away and immediately wanted to know more about this songwriter. Later, Linda Rondstadt had a hit with the song and it was also recorded by Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, and Dolly Parton on the second Trio album. Tip of My Tongue (written with Mark Luna) is a fun song about saying something that needs to be said. I find it irresistible. One Heart (written with Michael Lille) is a sweet and deeply spiritual song. That’s What I Love About the Rain (written with Jennifer Aschmann) is lovely. Simply lovely. Art Garfunkel (with Maia Sharp & Buddy Mondlock) has also recorded this beautiful song.
We love Tom in the Robertson household. I recorded his song, Ships on my album Smile, and my daughter Cally recorded Poetic Justice (written with Buddy Mondlock) and Trip on Love (written with Elizabeth Vidal) on a demo she recorded when she was 16.
The last video is of Tom reading The Sweetest and the Meanest from his book by the same name. I can’t tell you how many times, when discussing the South, my husband has pulled this book out to read this poem to our dinner guests. I think the book just stays in our dining room now. It is available from Amazon and there is an audio version you can find through the iTunes button above.

First of all, I love this quote about Tom’s music and used it to promote his concert at my house (we’ve had him twice):

He is everything that Mae says about him, although I can’t vouch for the sexy part…I first ran into him when I was a New Folk finalist. Imagine my chagrin when he performed right before before me. Yeah, one of those days. He’s an outstanding artist and writer, and an even better human being…
and, wow…I had never heard Cally’s voice before. Beautiful and expressive…
